THE BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING

(Article published in the April 2005 edition of the « Reverbere » publication.)

Are you unemployed??? Do you impatiently wait for the dream job to appear… Well, wait no longer! “If the mountain doesn’t come to you. . . , then go to the mountain!” * If work is not coming to you, then GO to the work! Create your “employment space”!

How? Become hired as a volunteer. Begin by giving. . . and provoke destiny. Find an area where you will be needed – there is no shortage of this in Victoria.  There are many associations and event organizers who recruit volunteers.

Why give your time? There are a thousand reasons, among others

You are trying to overcome the inertia of life that threatens to slow us all down when we are unemployed.
By creating a schedule for yourself and making an appearance, energy will start to flow quicker around you.
Finally, by being in a busy and structured environment you will be given many opportunities, even if there are no financial rewards.

Participating in a network of enriching relationships can sometimes bring you more than you expected;

- The chance to make use of your skills and knowledge and even sometimes to develop new ones;
- The opportunity to improve your English, if you are in an English environment;
- The chance to obtain positive references for future employment;

And, there is nothing better for the conscience than to do something for nothing…and who knows… the job you want might appear along the new path that you created.
